The father (Marshall Mathers Jr) left
him when he was a year and a half and was raised by his mother in
poverty. After various changes, settled in Warren, Michigan (Detroit
suburbs). At age 14 began making amateur raps under the name M &
M. Production Bassmint joined the group and released the LP titled
"Steppin 'onto the Scene", having left the group and and
changed his stage name to "Soul Intent" in 1995 and
released their first single, called "Fuckin' Backstabber".

attending Lincoln High School, participated in freestyle battles at
Osborn High School on the east side of Detroit. Although most of the
members of the hip hop movement in his state are descendants of
african Americans, Marshall turned out to be well accepted by the
public of the hip hop underground. After repeating the ninth grade
twice due to excessive absences and poor grades, he left school at 17
years.
In 1991, his maternal uncle, Ronald "Ronnie"
Nelson, committed suicide with a shotgun wound to the head. Marshall
was very close to him and was devastated by this fact. Today, he has
a tattoo on his left arm with writing: "RIP Ronnie."
It is thought that was the day that his uncle killed his mother
called him to say that she preferred that he had been dying.
The
U.S. rapper Eminem confessed in an interview with the television
program 60 Minutes, who was bullied when I was in school. The
musician explained that it was an easy target because he was always
into new schools, and even ended up in hospital.
